Knoxville driver arrested after fatal post-Super Bowl crash

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – One person is dead after a family crashed their car following a watch party for the big game Sunday night, according to Knoxville Police Department.

The crash happened at around 11:00 p.m. on Interstate 40 West at mile marker 401 in the Strawberry Plains area. Knoxville police said a family of five was heading back to Knoxville after watching the Super Bowl in Sevierville when their car went off the road, entered a median and tipped over.

Three of the five of the people inside the vehicle were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle, according to police. Investigators said they discovered alcohol was consumed during the party in Sevierville.

Blood samples were taken from the driver of the vehicle, Matthew Becknell, 35, who was injured in the crash. Police said after Becknell is released from UT Medical Center he will be arrested on multiple outstanding violations of probation. They said charges related to the crash are pending.

Becknell’s father Perry Becknell, 74, was killed in the crash. Two other passengers were injured.
