KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Jonathan Kongbo was the cherry on top of the University of Tennessee’s recruiting class.
The junior college standout at Arizona Western is a five-star recruit and a big get for Tennessee. Kongbo committed to Tennessee last year, the de-committed earlier this year before ultimately signing with the Vols.
“Even though he decommited a little bit, which I think was probably advice from his parents, but through it all he’s had Tennessee in the back of his mind,” said Inside Tennessee’s Danny Parker. Parker said it speaks volumes of Tennessee’s staff to get a five-star recruit from two time zones away. They had to hold off the University of Southern California in order to recruit Kongbo.
The football team put all of their chips on the table trying to get Kongbo to recommit to the team. Coaches Bob Shoop, Robert Gillespie and Steve Stripling, along with head coach Butch Jones, even took a trip to Arizona in late January. Kongbo tweeted a photo of them eating ice cream.
Jones said he was happy Tennessee could start National Signing Day strong with Marquez Callaway and finish with Kongbo.
