Woman dies after fiery North Knox County crash

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A woman has died after a fiery North Knox County crash that deputies say was caused by speeding.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office saw Harley Martin, 28, driving a Kia on Emory Road at a fast rate on Wednesday night after 7:30 p.m. The car went over the double yellow lines and headed toward Brown Gap Road.

Authorities say the driver lost control of the car as he turned onto Bell Road The car hit a tree and caught on fire at 7616 Bell Road.

Officials initially believed passenger Sarah Howe, 28, was ejected from the car, but now think she opened the door and fell out. She was transported by to U.T. Medical Center by Lifestar where she was later pronounced dead. Martin was also taken to UTMC where he remains.

Charges are pending at this time. Officers say this was not a police pursuit.
