KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A 14-year-old boy on a skateboard was hit and killed by a pickup truck in the Karns community of Knox County on Thursday night.
Deputies say Mark Bivens Jr. was skateboarding on Crosslane Road with a friend just after 7 p.m. when he was hit by a truck driven by a 17-year-old. Bivens was killed on impact.
Bivens’ 14-year-old friend managed to get out of the way and was not hurt. The driver said he didn’t see the boys until it was too late.
Brad Corum, Principal at Karns Middle School said counselors will be available to assist students. Corum said the accident involved three children in the Karns community and asked parents to keep the children and their families in their thoughts and prayers.
“Please be thinking of the staffs at both schools today as we attempt to go forward with the day,” said Corum. “Please know, although these times are extremely difficult and hard to understand, it is times like these that make me realize how much I love these kids, this staff, and this community.”
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, but does not expect charges to be filed.
