McGhee Tyson Airport offers non-stop flights to Las Vegas, Washington D.C.

Allegiant said new Knoxville routes will begin in May.

ALCOA (WATE) – Allegiant said they are offering two new non-stop destinations from McGhee Tyson Airport.

The airline said flights begin May 13 from Knoxville to Las Vegas, Nevada. Beginning May 20, they said non-stop flights from Knoxville to Washington D.C./Baltimore, Maryland start.

“One of the things that came in with the Vegas flight specifically was that we heard from citizens in the community, there was pent-up demand. The airport was helping to let us know there was a lot of interest,” said Eric Fletcher with Allegiant Air.

New flights start at $39, including taxes, for a one way ticket to Washington and Las Vegas, according to Allegiant. The low-cost airline has added 19 new routes to secondary U.S. cities, most of which are currently undeserved.

Serving Baltimore/Washington “makes a lot of sense,” said Allegiant Vice President of Network and Pricing, Lukas Johnson, in an interview with Flightglobal. The airline said they had considered serving Washington National and Washington Dulles airports, but decided Baltimore/Washington was the best choice.

It will also have a big impact economically in East Tennessee.

“As companies are making site location decisions, they’re always asking ‘How can we get in and out of the Knoxville region quickly and efficiently?’ So the more direct flights the better,” said Doug Lawyer with the Knoxville Chamber.

The news is great for travelers like Denise Watts who says it can be problematic finding direct flights for her entire family.

“It just opens up a whole lot more opportunities. Just a quick trip where traveling doesn’t take all day. It may just take that morning or afternoon,” she said.

In the past, Allegiant Air has twice offered non-stop flights to Las Vegas but stopped in April 2012 because of high fuel prices.

McGhee Tyson currently offers non-stop flights to 15 cities: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Punta Gorda, Tampa and Washington D.C., via Delta, United, American, Frontier and Allegiant airlines.
