Knoxville man turns 107, shares his secret to long, healthy life

Gaylord Maines

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A Knoxville man turned 107 years old Wednesday.

Though hard of hearing, Gaylord Maines is still able to get around with a walker and family members say his mind is sharp. Bonnie Callen from the University of Tennessee College of Nursing stopped by to drop off a birthday card and cookies decorated by third graders.

He said the key to a healthy long life happened for him decades ago.

“I used to be frivolous about it, but I think back in the 40s, I decided to quit smoking. I recommend that to anyone,” he said with a laugh.

Maines says he’s had a variety of jobs over the years, including working as a mechanic, in radio and with firefighters in Virginia and Ohio battling forest fires.
