KNOXVILLE (WATE) – People welcomed in 2016 in Knoxville’s Market Square with a festive, family-friendly event.
Hundreds attended the event in downtown Knoxville, which started with Music on Market Square, courtesy of WNOX 93.1 FM. A big screen showed images of memorable events from 2015. The countdown started at 11:55 p.m .with a ball drop and fireworks at the stroke of midnight.
The Holidays on Ice skating rink was open until midnight. Restaurants on the square were also open, offering special New Year’s Eve entrees.

Downtown Gatlinburg was also packed with around 50,000 people for the annual ball drop and fireworks at the Space Needle. The show, produced by Pyro Shows of Lafollette, Tennessee, features about 4,000 different shots fired from the rooftop and sides of the elevator shaft. Special music and rhythmic LED lights on the tower are choreographed for the fireworks.
