KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A shoplifting suspect is dead after being shot by a Knox County deputy at a West Knoxville sporting goods store after officials say hit two deputies with his car.
Amos Frerichs, 32, was shopping inside Academy Sports, 145 Moss Grove Boulevard, when was approached by investigators with KCSO’s Holiday Task Force. The suspect ran into the parking lot where he fought with the deputies. Deputies deployed their tasers, however, Frerichs continued to fight and resist arrest.
He was able to get into his vehicle and ran over both deputies knocking them to the ground. One of the deputies was able to get to his feet and fired shots as the suspect was attempting to hit the deputy again with his vehicle. Police say Frerichs crashed into more than one parked car.
Frerichs was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both deputies were treated for numerous non-life threatening injuries.
Frerichs has a long criminal history which includes multiple charges and arrests in Knox, Blount and Loudon counties. His previous charges include multiple assaults and thefts.
Police believe Frerichs fought with the deputies due to multiple outstanding warrants on file for his arrest in Knox County.
