ELIZABETHTON (WATE) – A man charged with shooting two people, including a deputy was arrested in Elizabethton Wednesday night.
Kelly Lee Pitts, 39, of Hickory, North Carolina, was charged with seven counts of criminal attempt to commit first degree murders. Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford told WJHL that Pitts was found armed and inside a cave 200 yards from where the shooting took place.
Carter County deputies responded to a home Wednesday night after a report of an intoxicated man waving a gun, according TBI. They said when officers arrived to investigate the report Pitts began shooting a firearm in the direction of the officers and the people who filed the report.
Deputies returned shots according to Sheriff Lunceford. He said deputy Jenna Markland was shot on the left side of her forehead, as well as on her face above her mouth. Another woman was shot in the hand. Both victims were taken to the Johnson City Medical Center, where they are currently in stable condition.
Following a search, TBI said Pitts was found in a cave near the residence and taken into custody without incident.
Pitts was booked into the Carter County Jail. At the time of his release he was being held on a $700,000 bond. TBI said they are investigating the incident.
