CALHOUN (WATE) – Fog resulted in the closure of a section of Interstate 75 in McMinn County Wednesday morning just over 25 years after 12 people were killed in a 99-car pileup in the same area, also due to the fog.
Drivers were detoured Wednesday morning at exits 33 and 36 between Bradley and McMinn counties. The highway reopened around an hour later. The fog zone was closed for a time Tuesday morning as well.
A massive pileup on December 11, 1990, in the same area resulted in 12 people’s deaths and 42 injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board investigating the accident, determined fog was the biggest contributing factor, and put in place a number of countermeasures to prevent similar accidents from recurring.
