SEVIERVILLE (WATE) – Two women were killed upon impact in a car crash on Thursday on Highway 66 in Sevier County.
Sevierville Police Department said the accident was reported around noon at the La Quinta Inn at the intersection of Huffaker Road and Winfield Dunn Parkway/Highway 66. The road was closed for about four hours as the Sevierville Police Department responded to the scene and assist with rescue efforts.
A witness told officers a Dodge pick-up truck, driven by 48-year-old Ronnie Grantham of Sevier County, ran a red light and hit a Chevrolet carrying three people. They told officials the vehicle made a left hand turn out of the La Quinta Inn when the truck hit the side of the vehicle.
The driver of the Chervrolet, later identified as 53-year-old Tammy Short of Newport, and a front seat passenger, Jeanette Hurst, 54, of Sevier County, were both killed upon impact, according to police.
A third passenger, 30-year-old Melissa Carnal of Newport, was taken by Life Star to University of Tennessee Medical Center and is in critical condition.
Grantham was also taken by Life Star to University of Tennessee Medical Center, but police he is in stable condition.
