KNOXVILLE (WATE)- The Lady Vols improve to 6-1 this season with an 85-49 win over ETSU. But, the final score doesn’t tell the whole story.
Tennessee struggled in the first half shooting just 36 percent in the first quarter and 40 percent in the second quarter. ETSU led for three minutes in the second quarter and the Lady Vols only had a nine point lead at the half.
Head coach Holly Warlick was visibly frustrated with her team in the second quarter and didn’t coach the entire second half of the game saying, “I don’t coach effort.”
“Our fans deserve more,” said Warlikc. “Our former Lady Vols deserve more. I’m not going to stand on the sidelines and watch them play with no emotion. So, I sat down. Good, bad, but I’m not coaching it.”
The team responded with an explosive second half shooting nearly 60 percent in both quarters. Diamond Deshields finished with 31 points, 8 rebounds, 7 steals and 5 assists. Te’a Cooper finished with 23 points.
“You know, not having [Holly’s] voice really made us want to dig down and do it for her because we understand that we upset her and if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy,” said Deshields.
