KNOXVILLE (WATE) – One person was killed Wednesday afternoon in a crash that shut down Gov. John Sevier Highway in South Knoxville.
The wreck was reported around 4:30 p.m. near the intersection with Norton Road and Mountain Grove Drive. The Knoxville Police Department says a Ford Focus driven by Shay Whitfield, 25, was going south on Norton Road and ran a red light.
A Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by Peggy Julian, 68, hit the Focus on the passenger side, causing the truck to flip on its side. Both drivers and their passengers were taken to UT Medical Center.
Whitfield’s passenger, Shana Young, 38, died while being treated at the hospital. Julian’s passenger, Terry Julian, 68, was also injured.
Police say it appears Whitfield was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. A blood sample will be sent to the TBI lab for analysis. Charges are pending.
