KNOXVILLE (WATE) – One person’s dead and another was transported to the hospital with what police say are life threatening injuries, after a shooting in downtown Knoxville on Saturday.
According to the preliminary investigation and multiple witness statements, several men were involved in an illegal drug transaction when shots were fired by what appears to be more than one person.
After being struck in the back by at least one round, 19-year-old Sidney Maurice Jackson, ran to the Weigels on Summit Hill Drive looking for help. Jackson was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he later died during surgery.
A second male was found, 16-year-old Sharmarkus Laquest Morelan, Jr., lying in the parking lot where the shooting occurred. He had multiple gunshot wounds to the head and was also transported to UT Medical Center. He is listed as critical condition with life-threatening injuries, officers said.
Jackson’s car was found at the scene, was towed and processed by evidence technicians.
Weapons and illegal drugs were recovered by officers from the scene of the shooting and at Weigels.
A third man was seen leaving the scene with three additional people in a light gray or white Ford Taurus.
