KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Knoxville Fire Department is offering some safety tips ahead of Halloween.
Spokesman Capt. DJ Corcoran says adults should make sure kids can’t trip over their costumes and they can see through any masks they may wear as part of those costumes.
Make sure kids know if they are walking along an area that doesn’t have a sidewalk to walk toward traffic, so if a car approaches, the driver can see the kids and they can see the car.
If you’re trick-or-treating in a neighborhood with a sidewalk, work one side of the street first and then cross at crosswalks or sidewalks. Don’t dart inbetween cars. Adults should be on the lookout for kids trick-or-treating to avoid accidents.
Look at costume tags to make sure they are flame retardant. Most Halloween costumes sold in the United States are now flame retardant.
