KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Tennessee Vols beat Georgia 38-31 on Saturday night.
Tennessee seemingly dominated the game early on, and as the Vols were set to score Jalen Hurd was stripped at the three yard line and Georgia’s Leonard Floyd returned the fumble 96 yards to put the Bulldogs up 7-0.
Tennessee answered with a field goal on its next possession cutting the lead to 7-3 before the end of the first quarter.
Georgia scored on the first play of the second quarter when Grayson Lambert found Malcolm Mitchell for a 28 yard touchdown pass giving the Bulldogs at 14-3 lead.
Georgia then tacked on a 37 yard field goal taking a 17-3 lead with 4:47 to go in the second quarter.
After Tennessee was forced to punt on its ensuing possession Reggie Davis returned the punt 70 yards for a touchdown giving Georgia a 24-3 lead.
Tennessee answered on its next possession converting two fourth down conversions including a 4th and 8 when Joshua Dobbs found Josh Smith for a 39 yard touchdown, cutting the lead to 24-10 with 1:04 to go in the 2nd quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff the Vols recovered a Georgia fumble and were able to cash in five plays later when Dobbs found Alvin Kamara for a two yard touchdown cutting Georgia’s lead to 24-17 at halftime.
Tennessee scored on its second possession of the second half going 67 yards in six plays capped by a Joshua Dobbs touchdown run tying the score at 24 with 8:31 to go in the 3rd quarter.
After the Vols defense forced a punt Tennessee scored again as Dobbs found Kamara for a two-yard touchdown giving the Vols their first lead of the game 31-24 with 1:26 to go in the 3rd.
Georgia responded quickly scoring on the first play of the 4th quarter when Greyson Lambert found Reggie Davis for a 48-yard touchdown tying the game at 31.
After the teams exchanged possession the Vols scored with 5:48 to go in the game when Dobbs scored from five yards out giving the Vols the lead again 38-31 with 5:48 remaining in the game.
Tennessee was able to force a Georgia punt, but then punted the ball back to Georgia. Trevor Daniel’s punt rolled out of bounds at the one-yard line with 1:48 remaining.
Georgia drove the ball down to the 27 yard line, but Greyson Lambert’s heave to the end zone fell incomplete as Tennessee won 38-31.
