Salvation Army now accepting annual Christmas assistance program

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Salvation Army will be accepting applications for its Christmas assistance program for children beginning on Monday.

Last year more than 1,600 children and over 100 senior citizens received Christmas gifts through the Angel Tree program.

Applications will be accepted from 9 a.m. until noon, Tuesday through Friday, September 1–4 and from 1 – 3 p.m. on September 8-11 and 15-18 at The Salvation Army’s office at 409 N. Broadway.

Each family seeking assistance must bring ALL of the following items:

  • A Valid Identification Card for applicant and ALL adults in the household.
    • Acceptable forms of ID:
      U.S. Driver’s License – State-issued Non-Drivers ID
      U.S. Passport – Employee or School ID
      Social Security Card – U.S. Military ID
  • Proof of residence (utility statement, bank statement, pay stub, etc.).
  • Proof of ALL income, earned and unearned (pay stub, unemployment, SSI,
  • Pension, Veterans, Disability, food stamps, child support, AFDC, WIC, etc.).
  • Proof of rent, mortgage or subsidized housing.
  • Proof of other expenses:(car, medical, food, credit cards, loans, etc.).
  • ALL current utility statements (electricity, water, gas, electric, cable, phone, etc.).
  • Birth Certificates for children 12 years and under in the household and clothes sizes.
  • Guardian/Grandparents must present custody papers.

The Angel Tree program is open to children 12 and under or adults 60 and over.

Registration for the Senior Christmas Assistance Program will take place on Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. until noon at The Salvation Army.

No appointment is necessary. Applicants are encouraged to not wait until the last day, but rather to apply earlier in the week. Applications for Blount, Sevier and Anderson Counties will be held at a later date.

Volunteers are also needed to assist with the application process.
