Oak Ridge preschool placed on lockdown after woman’s purse stolen nearby

OAK RIDGE (WATE) – An Oak Ridge preschool and school administration building were placed on lockdown for about an hour Tuesday afternoon when a woman was mugged at a nearby medical clinic.

Police were sent to Oak Ridge Medical Clinic, 170 W. Tennessee Avenue, around 1 p.m. Police say a woman had parked her vehicle in the parking lot. As she was walking to the building, the suspect violently grabbed her purse, the contents of which were worth about $300, and pushed her to the ground.

The suspect ran off, through residential lots toward the Oak Ridge Preschool/School Administration Building, 304 New York Avenue.

Officers with K9s began searching for the suspect and ordered a lockdown of the preschool building. Police and school resource officers responded to assist with escorting students to buses and parents’ vehicles when school let out.

The lockdown was lifted around 2:11 p.m. Oak Ridge Police Chief James Akagi says no children were ever in any danger.

The suspect was not located and the investigation is ongoing.
