KNOXVILLE (WATE) — In three weeks of training camp the Tennessee football team lost three players to season-ending injuries. The latest came Saturday with Butch Jones’ announcement that sophomore defensive back Rashaan Gaulden would miss the 2015 season due to a fractured foot.
Gaulden’s injuries follow injuries to offensive linemen Marcus Jackson and Austin Sanders. Both Jackson and Sanders are out for the season after suffering torn biceps.
When asked about the injuries Jones defended his program, “We research, from the turf, from the time of year. I have a five year study on injuries, and I can tell you this: The last three years were about the same, where we’re at in terms of individuals being held, individuals kind of being, you know, ‘status pending’ going into practice.”
“It’s unfortunate,” said Jones, “but it’s also a part of the game. It’s across the country. You don’t like it. You hate to see your players suffer. You feel for their families.”
The Vols didn’t practice Monday, but will return to the practice field on Tuesday as they continue to prepare for the season opening game against Bowling Green on September 5th in Nashville.
