Knoxville woman accused of obtaining prescription drugs via identity theft

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A Knoxville woman was arrested Friday after officials say she stole someone else’s identity on at least three occasions to obtain prescription drugs.

Sherri Alvinia DeVault Smith, 45, is charged with three counts of identity theft and one count of acquisition of a controlled substance by fraud or forgery.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says it was notified in March by Covenant Health Corporate Security that someone was trying to obtained controlled substances under false pretenses. TBI special agents say they determined that between September 2014 and September 2015, Smith at least three times obtained narcotics from a Knoxville pharmacy using the identity of someone else.

Smith was booked into the Knox County Detention Facility and released on $16,000 bond.
