ONEIDA (WATE) – Scott County Sheriff’s Office said they haven’t determined if foul play was involved after the body of a 17-year-old was found on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 27.
Scott County Sheriff Ronnie Phillips said the body was discovered by a person driving on U.S. Highway 27 just South of Galloway Drive around 5:00 a.m. He says detectives are conducting interviews to learn more about the teen. The sheriff says no missing persons report was ever made for the teenager whose body was found.
The body of the 17-year-old boy was sent to the University of Tennessee for an autopsy, according to Sheriff Phillips. He said there were no signs of trauma, no signs of a stabbing or gun shot wounds and the body doesn’t not appear to have been there long. Several people who say they know the teenager say he was a good kid who went to Scott County High School.
Investigators are still working to contact the family, so they will not yet release the teenager’s identity, according to Sheriff Phillips. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Tennessee Highway Patrol said they are also assisting in the case.
Scott County resident Cara Thompson says her heart goes out to that family.
“I lost a brother at 17 and I know how devastating it is on the family and I just feel so sorry for people who have lost loved ones,” said Thompson.
