GATLINBURG (WATE) – Rocky Top Sports World in Gatlinburg is celebrating one year open, and the sports complex has exceeded its first year projections.
There were 44 different multi-day sporting events held there, 69 percent more than anticipated, bringing in about $17.5 million dollars. The original estimate was $10 million.
“This proves the market was prime for a sports facility in the southeast region,” Gatlinburg City Manager Cindy Ogle said in a news release.
City leaders said youth sports tourism is the fastest growing travel segment, and they add Rocky Top Sports World is proving that in Gatlinburg.
“The Sevier County and Gatlinburg commissioners demonstrated great foresight in the development of Rocky Top Sports World,” said Mayor Larry Waters in a news release.
After it opened Rocky Top Sports World was named a “Top 6 Amateur Basketball Venue in the Country” by Collinson Media and Events.
Groups continue to book at the sports complex, with events already slated throughout 2015 and 2016.
Upcoming events include the Jabari Davis Speed and Skills Football Camp on Aug. 1 and the Labor Day Soccer Invitational hosted by National Soccer Events.
The facility was also recently awarded the AAU 2018 Fifth Grade Girls National Basketball Championship.
Rocky Top Sports World can also host private functions.
