New Knox County teachers attend workshop to prep for school year

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – New elementary school teachers in Knox County were welcomed with cheers, a red carpet and a quick picture before heading to the New Teacher Academy at Dogwood Elementary School on Wednesday.

The two-day training session is designed to help them learn the process and expectations in the county before welcoming students back to school on Aug. 10.

After a celebratory welcome, new teachers attended sessions covering topics for their grade level, teaching subject and technology training before heading to their classrooms.

“I think it’s great from us to come in new or old to come into a county that provides this kind of training, it’s wonderful because things have changed,” said Kalea Derry, a Hardin Valley fourth grade teacher.

“A lot of testing has changed with Knox County in kindergarten we’ve kind of gone away from that and started portfolio’s for the teachers so that’s going to be something new and exciting we’re going to be able to do,” said Christine Rhodes, a kindergarten teacher at Maynard Elementary

“I’ve been in my classroom for about two weeks now finishing putting up materials, curtains just to make it look homey, the scissors, glue, paper, getting the books ready those kinds of things,” said Derry. “I’m looking forward to being with the kids and watching them grow and learn, it’s just an exciting time a lot of new changes but it’s going to be wonderful.”

Following the academy, Knox County Schools will officially welcome new teachers during a new teacher celebration luncheon on Friday at 11:30 a.m. They’re expecting more than 225 teachers to attend.
