KNOXVILLE (WATE) – School across East Tennessee are beginning to open their doors and welcome student back.
WATE 6 On Your Side Financial Planner John Fawaz offers a few easy ideas on how to save a few bucks this school year.
Pack a lunch
This can save some cash over the course of the school year.
Shop at home first
We all have junk drawers around the house and they are filled tons of stuff. We can find rulers, calculators, pens and pencils. You want to start at home first and see what you have before you head to the store.
Shop at second hand, discount and dollar stores
Here, you might find clothes and other school supply that are in great shape and brand names that are pennies on the dollar.
Wait until after Labor Day to shop
John says generally there are a lot of great deals. This is one of few times it pays to be a procrastinator.
Save your receipts and make sure you shop at stores that price match
Tax free weekend is coming up August 7-9. You will not pay state or local sales tax on clothing, school or art supplies that cost $100 or less per item and computers that cost $1,500 or less.
Budget and set limits
Budget and set limits on how much you are going to spend per child. If you reach your limit you can make the kids use some of their own money (allowance or working). John says this is a great way to teach them the value of dollar and responsibility.
