KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A woman who was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street, died on Thursday night from her injuries.
According to the initial investigation, a 2005 Chevy Express van driven by 54-year-old Thomas Wayne Sherman of Maryville, was traveling on Broadway when it stopped at a red light at the intersection of Cecil Avenue on Wednesday evening. When the light turned green, the van struck Francisca Chaja Pelico, 46, of Knoxville and her nine-year-old relative, Mariela Sontay while they were crossing a crosswalk.
Chaja was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. She died a day later from her injuries, according to the Knoxville Police Department.
Sontay was treated on scene with what police say are minor injuries.
The driver was taken to UT Medical Center for a blood draw. The vehicle was taken to the city pound.
