Do not put it in direct sunlight. Shaded areas like the north side of a building work best. Do not put the thermometer over a dark surface. Grassy areas work well. You should not put the thermometer on the ground. Four feet off the ground is best. Finally, do not put the thermometer near ventilation or exhaust from a building. The area around your thermometer should be ventilated.
