NASHVILLE (WKRN) – When police arrested a man and woman Thursday afternoon, they said the parents had slurred speech, were drooling and unsteady on their feet. They also had a baby with them.
Cassandra Degroat, 33, and James Pippin, 33 were both arrested after witnesses reported to police that they were under the influence of drugs at two Nashville gas stations. Degroat was charged with driving under the influence with a child, child neglect and driving on a revoked license. Her bond was set at $78,000. Pippin was charged with possession of a controlled substance and child neglect. His bond was set at $27,000.
Pippin told police he took four or five Xanax pills from his prescription with Degroat. Police seized the remaining 61 pills from Pippin, whose prescription was filled Wednesday and was missing 29 pills.
The infant was released to its grandmother and the Department of Children’s Services was notified of the arrests. Police said they believed neither parent was able to care for the child in their conditions.
