East Tennessee Children’s Hospital creates large mosaic

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – East Tennessee Children’s Hospital is creating a large mosaic that will be placed in the new expansion of the hospital, but they are asking for the public’s help in for this large project.

The mosaic is set to go up in the fall of 2016.

“This is on a normal sheet of paper by then they will reduce down to a one inch square and incorporate that into a mosaic piece,” said Vice President of Development at the Children’s Hospital Calton Long. “So when you look at this big drawing, it will look like a scene, but when you get up close, you realize it is made up of thousands individual drawings from children, patients, families, adults.”

The Children’s Hospital has also teamed up with schools in the 16 counties they serve, but now they are having community sessions so families can participate.

Whether you write words, draw pictures or make designs, Long said they would like the mosaic to come together and look like this.

“We have taken a piece of each one of those counties.  For instance, in Oak Ridge we’ve taken one of the buildings with the atomic symbol, Mayfield Dairy’s because of Athens.  We have the airport, we have the mountains and we have the river,” said Long.

The staff asked for to put their email address on the back of the paper so they can email you where your drawing will be located in the mosaic. The hospital needs 15,000 more pictures from the community.

If you would like to participate, they are having another session Monday in the hospital lobby from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
