KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Lady Vol softball team rode the hot arm of starting pitcher Rainey Gaffin all the way to the Women’s College World Series with a 2-1 win against Florida State in the third and final game of the Knoxville Super Regional.
Gaffin pitched a complete game, giving up just five hits, two walks and one run while striking out four. The Lady Vols opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st thanks to an RBI double from Megan Geer to score Gaffin from second. Tennessee added to their lead in the fourth on a fielder’s choice from Shaliyah Geathers that, coupled with a throwing error, scored CJ McClain to make it a 2-0 game. Florida State scored their lone run in the 5th but couldn’t add to it.
The Lady Vols are headed back to Oklahoma City for the program’s 7th trip to the Women’s College World Series.
