The Women’s Fund of East Tennessee awards grants to help single mothers

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A group aimed at helping low-income single moms in East Tennessee is growing in support.

The Women’s Fund of East Tennessee awarded a $6,000 grant Wednesday to A Hand Up for Women, which in turn is using it to help the Restoration House in Knoxville.

Crews are putting the finishing touches on the Restoration House Village aimed at getting women back on their feet.

“The main thing we’re looking for is families who are low income, single mothers and their kids, and that they have a demonstrated motivation and desire for something different in their life. So they need to be at that place where they really want to work toward a new future, and we’re going to be charging that hill with them,” said Daniel Watson, founder of Restoration House Village.

A Hand Up for Women will be using the grant to provide classes for women on everything from life management, to job skills and spiritual development.

“I was thrilled when we got the word because it is a really grueling competitive process,” said Eva Pierce, executive director of A Hand Up for Women.

“In just three short years of granting, the Women’s Fund has provided $240,250 to 15 organizations throughout the 25 counties that we serve. We can’t thank the philanthropic community enough for standing with us,” said Terry Morgan, director of the Women’s Fund.

“For us the community has really rallied around us which tells us there is a big heart in Knoxville for single mothers and their children. We’re just overwhelmed at the generosity and look forward to being a good steward of that,” Watson said.

The Women’s Fund is also donating another $6,000 to A Hand Up for Women, which they are using to further work with the Salvation Army.
