The $500 scholarship is awarded each year to a senior at each Knox County Schools high school.

The scholarship honors Barney Thompson, a teacher and coach at South High School in the 1970s.

After his career in education, Thompson served as the executive director of the Knoxville Area Association of Realtors and continued as an education advocate as the treasure of the Partners in Education Board for 15 years.

The Knoxville Area Association of Realtors contributes $4,000 each year toward the scholarships, and the remainder is funded through the Knox County Schools’ Dine Out for Education.
