KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Knoxville Police Department says a 5-year-old girl was hit by a van after getting off a school bus in South Knoxville Friday afternoon.
The incident was reported just after 3 p.m. on Joe Lewis Road in the Montgomery Village area.
The girl, a kindergartener at Mooreland Heights Elementary, was taken to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital for minor injuries. Officers say she was crying, but didn’t have any broken bones. Her mother went with her to the hospital.
The driver of the van, Andrea Nicole Medley, 21 was charged with two counts of passing a stopped school bus. Police said two school buses were stopped with their stop signs deployed and lights flashing when Medley passed both buses on the stop side of the vehicles.
As the van was passing the second bus, officers said the van hit the child.
