KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Knox County Sheriff’s Office said they have located the body of a man wanted for a shooting in West Knox County.
The body of Benjamin Hackney, 46, was found after 6:00 p.m. near 9906 Coward Mill Road. Hackney was a suspect in the shooting of his roommate, Marty Humphrey, 55, Sunday night.
Investigators said Sunday Hackney, Humphrey and his wife got into a fight at their house, located at 10317 Coward Mill Road. Deputies said Hackeny shot Humphrey in the stomach and fled the house before emergency personnel arrived. Humphrey was taken to the hospital, but officers said they aren’t sure if he will survive.
A viewer saw the news on television and said he or she had seen Hackney’s Chevy S10 pick up truck on Coward Mill Road. Knox County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit found Hackney’s body in the wood line near his truck.
Hackney’s cause of death has not been determined. Knox County Medical Examiner’s Office said they will release information as it develops. He was charged with attempted first degree murder and aggravated assault. Deputies also said Hackney had a criminal history in Knox county that includes simple possession and driving while under the influence.
