ALCOA (WATE) – A 21-year-old man is now charged in connection with a hit and run accident in Alcoa that resulted in the death of a man in an electric wheelchair.
Travis K. Garland, of Maryville, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with death or injury and tampering with or fabricating evidence.
Officers were called to Calderwood Street at Sanderson Street around 2:13 p.m. and found Hampford W. Murphy, 71. was severely injured. He was taken to UT Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police say according to an investigation and witness interviews, Murphy was leaving the Midland Shopping Center parking lot in his electric wheelchair when he was hit by a 1994 green Chevrolet Cavalier going northbound on Calderwood Street. They say the driver then backed up, turned on Sanderson Street and fled.
A witness was able to provide a license plate number, and officers found the vehicle in the Blount County Public Library parking lot. The suspect, determined to be Garland, was at a nearby business.
Garland is being held on $32,500 bond.
