Former Cocke County businessman pleads guilty to sales tax evasion

NEWPORT (WATE) – President of Amaco BP Express pleaded guilty to 10 felony counts of sales tax evasion in Cocke County Criminal Court on Tuesday.

Vijay Bhikhabhai Patel was sentenced to serve probation for 10 years, five supervised and five unsupervised.

Cocke County Judge Ben Hooper also ordered Patel to pay $39,132.63 in restitution to the state for sales tax owed.

The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to Patel’s plea and sentencing.

The Department of Revenue pursued the criminal case in cooperation with District Attorney General James Dunn.
