Tennessee names Rick Barnes new men’s basketball coach

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The University of Tennessee has named Rick Barnes the new men’s head basketball coach for the Volunteers.

Tennessee will introduce Barnes at a press conference Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. WATE 6 On Your Side will carry the press conference live:

Barnes annual pay will be $2,250,0000 along with incentives. His contract lasts six seasons, through April 15, 2021. If he is terminated early without cause, the University of Tennessee will pay one million dollars per year through the end of his contract.

“Rick Barnes is an elite basketball coach in every respect,” Tennessee Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Dave Hart said. “Rick brings an extremely impressive track record of excellence, as well as much-needed stability, to our men’s basketball program.”

The former Texas Longhorns has taken the Longhorns to the NCAA Tournament 16 times in the last 17 years and has made it to the Final Four.
