NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Millions of people will commit a crime this week without even knowing they are doing so.
Office pools in which people fill out brackets for the NCAA Tournament are illegal in Tennessee if money is involved.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates over $2.5 billion is gambled on the basketball tournament each year, which is even more than the Super Bowl.
Rob McGuire, a Nashville lawyer, told News 2 any gambling on a game of chance is illegal in Tennessee if money is put down to play.
McGuire added breaking this law is considered a Class C misdemeanor and is punishable by up to 30 days in jail.
He told News 2 the law is rarely, if ever, upheld due to the sheer number of companies where employees take part in pools.
