SEATTLE (MEDIA GENERAL) – If you like to buy in bulk, but don’t like having to use American Express, you’re in luck. Costco has made the decision to switch preferred credit card providers from American Express to Visa.
The change won’t take place until April 1, 2016 for all of Costco’s 474 warehouse stores in the United States and Puerto Rico.
American Express has been paired with Costco for the last 16 years. This change will now allow Costco to accept Visa using Citigroup as its exclusive provider of co-branded credit cards.
Customers will also be able to use Visa and MasterCard debit cards, or pay in cash. American Express credit cards will no longer be accepted as of April 1, 2016.
Costco says more information about the transition to the new cards will be coming in the future including if existing customers will have to reapply for membership.
