4 Red Cross of East Tennessee shelters open

CROSSVILLE (WATE) – Red Cross of East Tennessee said conditions are continuing to improve.

Michelle Hankes, the Executive Director of the East Tennessee Red Cross said four shelters are still open. Eight shelters were open at the peak of power outages from winter storms.

Open shelters:

  • Cumberland Fellowship Baptist, 1640 West Avenue, Crossville
  • First Baptist Jamestown, 306 E. Central Avenue, Jamestown
  • Monterey Junction Professional Office, 305 Holly St. in Monterey
  • National Guard Armory, 1685 McMinnville Highway, Sparta

Hankes said many shelters, particularly the Crossville shelter are very full.

“A lot of them have medical needs because they’re senior citizens, so we’re working very hard to make sure we serve everything they need,” said Hankes

The executive director said with feeding and housing so many people, resources are stretched thin. That’s why the Red Cross is asking for donations.

“We are very, very frugal, so do know that every dollar is going to go to disaster.”
