Minor earthquake strikes in the Smokies

GATLINBURG (WATE) – A minor earthquake struck in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park early Wednesday morning.

The United States Geological Survey says the epicenter of the 2.1 magnitude quake was about seven miles south of Gatlinburg, on Goshen Ridge near Clingmans Dome. The quake happened around 4:15 a.m.

Park officials say only three earthquakes recorded since the 1970s have had epicenters within park boundaries.

A 2.0 to 2.9 magnitude quake is considered minor. People may be able to feel it, but it does not cause damage.
