2 appear in NY court on charges they sought to join IS group

NEW YORK (AP) – Two men accused of plotting to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group and wage war against the U.S. have appeared in federal court in New York City.

Akhror Saidakhmetov and Abdurasul Hasanovich Juraboev were ordered held without bail Wednesday on charges of attempt and conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist organization.

Federal agents say 19-year-old Saidakhmetov was arrested after midnight while attempting to board a flight to Istanbul and then head to Syria. The 24-year-old Juraboev was arrested in Brooklyn and had tickets to travel to Turkey next month.

Saidakhmetov’s attorney says his client was a “young, innocent kid.” Juraboev’s attorney didn’t comment.

A third suspect accused of supporting the plan appeared in federal court in Florida and was held without bail.
