Tennessee Army National Guard soldiers ready to help stranded drivers

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Icy roads and below freezing temperatures continue throughout the state Wednesday. More than 30 Tennessee Army National Guard soldiers are on standby and ready to assist drivers as needed.

This includes soldiers from Paris, Dickson, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Lenoir City, Knoxville, Kingsport, Smyrna and Nashville. They are able to perform health and welfare checks should local authorities need help.

Knoxville soldiers say they have multiple crews, Humvees and even helicopters ready to go.

“All of them have Humvees and larger trucks to go out and assist motorists who may be stranded. Any kind of requirement that TEMA may push forward but we’re ready for any kind of emergency to go and help local authorities as they require it,” said Major Tim Schubert.

Schubert says the soldiers are on duty throughout Wednesday, but that might be extended if needed. So far they have not been called out.
