Knoxville expert weighs in on choosing the healthiest yogurt

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Did you know that all yogurt is not created equal? Some has more sugar than your favorite dessert.

There are so many choices on the grocery store shelf, we wanted to know what’s good for you, and what isn’t.

WATE 6 On Your Side purchased six popular brands of yogurt and took them to Parkwest Medical Center, where registered dietitian Karin Adler weighed in on the contents of the best and the worst when it comes to healthy choices.

The samples we brought in:

  • Liberte French Vanilla
  • Dannon Oikos Apple Pie
  • Yoplait Original Strawberry Banana
  • Yoplait Light Strawberry Banana
  • Dannon with Fruit (peach)
  • Chobani Fat Free Plain Greek Yogurt

The worst offender, according to our dietitian, is Liberte. At 260 calories, it has 12 grams of fat. Seven grams of that fat is saturated fat, the “unhealthy” fat that is bad for your heart.

It also contains more sugar than a Hostess cupcake.

“It’s got 29 grams of sugar. That is the most of any of the yogurts we brought, and I suspect that a good amount of that is added sugar,” said Adler.

Some of the sugar could be attributed to naturally occurring milk sugar, but soon, the USDA will be clearing that up by making changes to nutritional labels by including the amount of added sugar in the foods we buy.

“The American Heart Association is recommending that women get no more than six teaspoons of added sugar a day, which is about 100 calories. How many grams is that when we’re looking at the label? That’s 25 grams. For men, they get 150 calories and 37 grams,” Adler explained.

The other yogurts were relatively low in fat, but have sugar content you need to notice:

“Four grams of sugar. Voila. All that sugar is from the milk sugar,” she said.

To sweeten the yogurt in a healthy way, add a little honey, strawberries, pineapple or a few walnuts.

The American Heart Association recommends an ounce of nuts a day for their beneficial fats.
