KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputy was placed on administrative leave after he was arrested Thursday night on charges of domestic assault, DUI and interference with emergency calls.
Ricky Irwin Jr., 32, has been released from jail on $2,750 bond.
Warrants say Irwin and his wife were in an argument around 7:30 p.m. Thursday in their Powell home when Irwin allegedly broke his wife’s cell and house phones when she tried to call 911.
Their 15-year-old son told officers he tried to intervene, jumped on Irwin’s back and tried to strangle him from behind. Irwin punched at the boy.
Irwin then left the home with the couple’s 8-year-old daughter, allegedly pushing his wife and son in the process.
He later returned to the home after deputies arrived.
Detectives on the scene said Irwin’s behavior, abnormal speech and dilated eyes led them to believe he was under the influence of something.
Irwin was taken into custody and later admitted he had taken Xanax and anti-depressants. Irwin’s wife and son refused medical treatment.
Irwin has been with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office since 2003. He was promoted from Corrections to Patrol in 2008.
