KNOXVILLE (WATE) – One person is dead after two separate crashes on Interstate 40 Westbound in West Knox County.
The crashes happened around 3:51 a.m. Thursday on I-40. All lanes of I-40W east of Lovell Road were shut down for multiple hours.
It all started with a crash involving a car and a tractor trailer. Troopers say traffic was slowing due to construction ahead. A tractor trailer driven by David Bond, 37, was stopped in the traffic lane when it was hit in the rear by a 1999 Lexus driven by Richard Sampley, 34.
Sampley was injured in the crash. Troopers say charges are pending against him.
The second crash happened only moments later involving two cars.
THP says a 2003 Toyota driven by Ernesto Carricaburu, 40, and a 2014 Toyota driven by Mark Northern, 62, were both going westbound near exit 375. Northern was decreasing speed due to slowing traffic ahead.
Troopers say Carricaburu struck Northern’s vehicle in the rear, causing Northern’s vehicle to veer off the right side of the roadway.
Carricaburu was killed in the crash. Troopers say he was not wearing a seat belt. His passenger, Pierce Hartley, 27, was injured, as was Northern.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office along with THP are investigating the accidents.
