Alcoa City Schools reopen Monday after widespread illness

ALCOA (WATE) – Students in Alcoa City Schools will head back to class Monday morning after widespread sickness forced the school system to close its doors.

Alcoa Elementary, Middle and High Schools were all closed on Friday as a precaution.

School administrators say more than 18 percent of elementary school students were absent the day before and up to 20 teachers were sick as well.

They say students tested positive for both strep throat and the flu.

Cleaning crews were hard at work on Friday sanitizing all three buildings.

The director of schools says this same thing happened about five or six years ago.
