MOORESBURG (WATE) – A Hawkins County couple is accused of robbing a man and trying to kill him with a ratchet wrench and a knife.

Larry Fayne Carpenter, 34, and Amanda Mae Carpenter, 32, are both charged with attempted second degree murder.

Hawkins County deputies say they were called to a home on Slate Hill Road in Mooresburg around 6 p.m. for a report of a robbery.

When they arrived, they spoke to a neighbor who said he heard someone yelling his name from his back porch. The neighbor then saw Robert G. Williams, 67, covered in blood and yelling for help.

Williams said Larry and Amanda Carpenter had come to his home to sell him some items, including a ratchet wrench. Williams said he told them he wasn’t interested, and that’s when Larry Carpenter became angry and began hitting Williams in the head with the ratchet. He also tried to cut Williams’ throat with a kitchen knife.

Williams said he had been yelling for help for around 45 minutes before his neighbor found him.

Deputies discovered William’ wallet, car keys and cell phone had been stolen.

He was bleeding from facial, neck and head wounds. He was taken to Morristown Hamblen Hospital where, as of Monday morning, he is listed in serious condition.

Both Carpenters are being held without bond.
