COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Alex Reid rushed for 88 yards and three touchdowns and caught a 41-yard scoring pass to lead Union City’s 56-14 win over Coalfield in the Class 1A state championship game Friday at Tennessee Tech’s Tucker Stadium.
Ricky Henry added two touchdowns for Union City (14-0), rushing for a 7-yard score and returning a fumble 40 yards for a TD.
Reid was named most valuable offensive player. Jovante Moffatt had two tackles, one interception and two pass breakups to earn most valuable defensive player honors.
It was the Golden Tornadoes’ second straight championship and third overall.
Union City led 14-8 at the half but pulled away in the third quarter, scoring 35 unanswered points in the period. Union City gained 433 yards to 155 for Coalfield (10-5).
John Ervin led Coalfield rushers with 60 yards on two carries.
Cameron Godwin caught a 3-yard pass from Coalfield quarterback Parker McKinney in the first quarter, and Addison Bible returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Yellow Jackets.
