COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Brant Mitchell had 111 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries and returned an interception for another score to lead Webb School of Knoxville to a 38-21 victory over Battle Ground Academy in Tennessee’s Division II-A state title game Thursday at Tennessee Tech’s Tucker Stadium.
The win is Webb’s eighth championship and fifth in the last six years.
Mitchell also had five tackles and two interceptions, earning offensive and defensive MVP honors for the game.
The score was tied 7-7 after the first quarter, but Webb (10-3) scored 24 unanswered points, including Mitchell’s 55-yard interception return for a score with 7:17 left in the half and a touchdown by Wrinn Alexander on a blocked punt.
Quarterback Clayton Beathard threw for 248 yards and a touchdown for BGA (10-3) while Ronald Cleveland caught six passes for 112 yards. Beathard also had a rushing touchdown among his 10 carries for 6 yards. Zach Hardiman had a touchdown and 56 yards on his 11 carries.
