KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The Knoxville Police Department investigated allegations of misappropriation of city equipment in the Lorraine Street garage unit of the Fleet Services department.

The city says Michael Smith, a supervisor of heavy shop at Fleet’s Lorraine Street garage, has been placed on administrative leave without pay. Smith was hired in April 1990 and supervises 24 people.

Fleet Services maintains the city’s more than 1,400 vehicles and equipment, everything from squad cars to fire trucks and snow plows.

KPD said Thursday afternoon it has completed its investigation and it is now up to the city law department on whether to press charges.

Smith’s personnel file revealed a written reprimand was given to him in 2010 for unauthorized use of a city vehicle.
